Wightlink’s most responsible angler for 2023 is Louis Bishop

Teenage fisherman Louis Bishop from Shanklin has been recognised as an Isle of Wight angler who really cares for the fish he catches.
During the latest Vectis Boating and Fishing Club’s Junior Fishing Frenzy on Ryde Pier, courtesy of the Pier’s owners Wightlink, he was judged to be the most considerate and polite young angler, ensuring the welfare of the fish he caught.
The 13-year-old who is a pupil at The Bay Academy, has been named as Wightlink’s Responsible Angler of 2023.
Louis says: “I love angling and take my responsibility to the environment seriously. This includes putting no plastic into the ocean and taking care of the fish before you return them to the sea.”
Event organiser Colin Webb explains: “There were plenty of nice and polite children this year.
“However, one chap was just that bit special. He was very polite, tidy and considerate to others but was very patient when we got inundated with fish to measure and was super-conscious of taking care of his fish ready for release.”
The annual Fishing Frenzy saw 23 young anglers take part in three rounds of competition as well as the final in August. It was co-sponsored by Wightlink and Ryde Bait and Tackle Shop.
Every year, as part of its Wightlink in the Community programme, Wightlink gets together with the club to reward the young fisherman or woman who has conducted themselves best over the course of a year’s angling on Ryde Pier.

This year’s trophy has been sourced from Sculptglass of Arreton as part of Wightlink’s policy to work with local suppliers whenever possible.
