Holidaymakers crossing the Solent with Wightlink this half-term are guaranteed a steamy start to their break if they invest in a bottle of a Bloody Hell Hot Sauce, exclusively made on the Isle of Wight.
Robert Powers started making the sauce, based on a traditional family recipe from his Granny Gonzales, as a hobby while he was working as an engineer at home in California. It’s produced in small batches in Ryde, using a mix of Mexican, Cajun and Caribbean flavours along with a secret ingredient. The unique hot sauce is available at Wightlink’s Wight Taste cafés, selected Isle of Wight shops and other retail outlets.
“Bloody Hell Hot Sauce is full of flavour as well as heat and is definitely worth tasting” says Robert. He is planning to develop a Bloody Mary mix with the hot sauce, as well as other tasty applications.
Back in 2017, the sauce hit the headlines. Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd threatened to sue Robert and his wife because their skull-shaped homemade hot sauce bottle was seen as being ‘too similar’ to that of the actor’s luxury vodka. The bottle has now been re-designed.
“Part of our retail strategy is to support local businesses, so we are delighted to sell Robert’s amazing hot sauce as part of our range,” says Wightlink’s Head of Retail Dan Haynes.
