Inspirational Islanders: Noah Evans – Sailor

Wightlink is a big part of life on the Isle of Wight. We regularly give back to the communities that we operate in, to leave a legacy for future generations. In our Inspirational Islanders blog series, we interview inspiring people from on the Isle of Wight to find out about their lives and what they love about the Island. From photographers to netball players, each one shares their favourite places to give you insider knowledge on where to find the best coffee, walks, sunsets, wildlife and much more.

Currently in Year 12 at Ryde School studying Mathematics, Physics, Geography and Economics, Noah learned to sail at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club aged 10. He was ranked No.1 in the UK for ILCA 4 in 2022 before moving into the larger sail ILCA 6 class and will compete this year as part of the Island Games Sailing Team.

“I love the Isle of Wight. The fact that we live so close to the sea is amazing, with all the sailing that goes on. In the summer I’m out on the water almost every day either fishing, working or sailing. It makes the Island the perfect place to live.

I would say that my favourite place on the Island is Cowes. There is so much going on, especially in the summer, with all the yacht racing. My summer job is also in Cowes, where I work for the Royal Yacht Squadron, helping organise the big yacht races. I find it really interesting and rewarding. The food and nightlife there are also fun.

If I want to go for a walk, I don’t have to stray too far from my house in Binstead. We live on the footpath between Ryde and Quarr Abbey and I love that route because it’s so peaceful and tranquil.

Another local choice here, my favourite beach has to be Binstead beach, leading to Woodside. Not many people visit this beach even though it has amazing views over the Solent and the sands extend a long way out, making it perfect for walking dogs.

Travelling around the country to races can be really expensive, so the sponsorship from Wightlink makes a real difference financially. Plus, it enables me to get to training camps and events more easily.”
